"Very cool retro hotel"

Great check in process. Great atmosphere and wonderful retro hotel, it was more than I expected. There were two rooms in the room a living room and a bed room. Living room had a cute little kitchen area and great decorations. Right on the beach and boardwalk. Not a lot going on in the town while we were there I think it is a more of a summer destination but it was a very cool room.

"Nice Location, Reasonable prices, Clean and As Advertised."

We found this place looking for unusual. Our first choice would have been the Airstream trailer, just for that reason. However, when that was not available, we opted for a funky room instead. Nothing earth shattering, but a colorful 60's theme throughout the room, complete with lava lamp. The free loaner bikes to ride were a very pleasant bonus.

"Not worth the money"

Had a room with a queen sized bed. Lighting in the room was horrible. Lamp shades were metal and focused light in only one direction. Lava lamp did not work. Construction in the hotel during our stay. Whole rooms were being torn up and rebuilt. Entrance to the lobby was not obvious. Surrounding neighborhood seemed unsafe. There was an outside facing window in the shower and the shower curtain was broken and did not completely cover the window. Had to hang a towel over the window. There was no convenient towel rack anywhere near the shower. You had to walk across the bathroom to get the towel or put the towel on the floor near the shower. This experience makes me suspicious of booking hotels sight unseen.

Room was TINY but clean. outside needs renovation. Hotel need parking on premises not across street as local teens park cars in the lot and hang out there since there is a community center right there. Would probably stay someplace else next time in Wildwood.

We arrived late and were just planning to stay overnite in order to catch the ealry ferry. The people at the front desk were friendly enough. I think we were the only customer staying at the hotel ( it was their off season). We found the rooms to be very small, especially the bathroom. There was something in the corner of the room- we are thinking some kind of animal droppings...didnt make for a comfortable stay. We were out of there at the crackof dawn. Dont plan on going back.

We stayed in the Airostream Trailer - extremely small. Would not recommend this for anyone. The trailer wasn't very clean and the pool was greenish brown. The ONLY plus was how close we were to the beach.

The Starlux Is Great!
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
My girlfriend and i just spent five nights over july 4th weekend at the starlux and we really liked it. It's an old motel that's been renovated in a retro-doowop style, but with all the amenities you'd expect from a regular hotel. You can tell that the owners care, from the cool design of the place to the extras: exercise room, stereos in the suites, etc. Plus, there's a free continental breakfast every morning. The rooms are stylish and clean, the common areas--especially the lounge--are comfortable and fun, and the pool is nice, if a little small. The staff was helpful and friendly too. I only have two suggestions. First, high-speed internet access in the rooms--for a price, of course--would be great (the extra phone line provided was too noisy for my powerbook to use, but the manager directed us to an internet cafe down the street). Second, some kind of restaurant/bar would be great (or the owners could bring back the free wine tastings we heard they used to have). Overall, the starlux was a very nice place to stay. It's not right on the beach, but it's close to everything, and the atmosphere was perfect for a weekend in the wildwoods. I'm sure we'll go back at some point.

Step Back Into Time At This Awesome Hotel!!!!!!!

My husband and I stayed at the starlux for our two year wedding anniversary. We orginally wanted to stay in cape may, but due to the jazz festival that particular weekend, we could not find any vacancies there. I read about the starlux in a brochure for the jersey cape beaches and thought that it looked really cool. We were pleasantly suprised to say the least when we checked in! We had a 2 room suite on the top floor with ocean views from the balcony! The rooms were decorated with a retro 50's decor as well as the glass-enclosed recreation room where they serve a continental breakfast to guests. My husband and I actually ended up filming our own mini-documentary of other retro 50's hotels in the wildwood area so that we could show it to our parents who grew up in that era. We loved the starlux and we enjoyed wildwood even if it was in the off-season. I look forward to staying there again!

Not Your Standard Hotel

My friends and I planned on taking a trip to wildwood for a weekend in april 2001. I was searching the internet and came across the starlux website and automatically chose it. After reserving a room off the website I received a phone call a few hours after to confirm. The hotel from the outside looks awesome. Our check in was quick and we went to our room. As soon as we opened the door our mouths dropped. There were beads hanging from the ceiling, lava lamps, and a stereo in the living room. The staff is incredibly nice, and helpful and the lounge area makes you laugh because its something you'd see in a 70's movie. I haven't been back since but i've been dying to. Oh yeah they also have a continental breakfast with a ton of food. Not just a few muffins and bad coffee many other hotels give you. Stay at the starlux.

The Quintessential Doo-Wop Experience!
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
What brought us to this top-notch motel was truly serendipitous—we'd previously booked the grand down in crest. When we arrived there, we immediately obtained a refund and bailed due to its deplorable condition. After pounding the pavement for a vacancy, we managed to snag a two-room suite at the newly-refurbished starlux motel, featuring cute retro ‘50s shtick decor and “back in the day” feel. Our suite had an adorable fully-stocked little kitchenette (right down to the bottle opener and dishwashing detergent), trippy paint patterns on accent walls and “mid-century modern” furniture. The “glass lounge” offered a complimentary “coffee and…” buffet each morning, and movie nights on a widescreen plasma tv. The lounge was also stocked with board games, interesting ‘50s books to peruse, and a selection of daily newspapers. Beads and lava lamps in the windows, and comfy couches and furnishings added to the ambience. The outdoor heated pool with jacuzzi, and poolside furnishings were clean and well-maintained, boasting funky faux-palm trees, creative lighting and doo-wop music. Every little detail at the starlux has been carefully planned, and the staff obviously cares about the comfort and satisfaction of their guests. The only inconvenience was limited parking, but they even offered to move our car for us to the next available space when we were out enjoying the nearby boardwalk. Our 14th anniversary stay in wildwood ended up being a total smash, thanks to what we consider the doo-wop center of wildwood itself, the starlux motel. Highly recommended! We will be back.

We stayed here in july 2004. This hotel took me back to a time when hawaii five o was in. The decor was beautiful. Each room has a microwave and refrigerator. The bathrooms had excellent lighting. The lounge is inviting and comfy and offers a place to watch tv or just hang out. Each room has a lava lamp. The heated pool and jacuzzi are very refreshing in the mid afternoon. All poolside furnishings were kept in great shape. The fake palm trees make you feel that you are far from home. Doo-wop music is piped into the hallways. Since we found the starlux, we no longer need to go as far away as ocean city, md or virginia beach to enjoy time away from ny. We plan to go every year!!!!

Good.. Maybe A Bit Overrated??

Visitor Review
A friend and i just got back from the starlux this weekend and had a fun time. The vibe at this place can best be described as "retro 50's futuristic", kind of like being on the set of the jetsons. The room (room 406) didn't seem as big as the diagrams on the webpage, but was certainly big enough for two people. It had a queen bed in one room, then an additional room with a sofabed, tv, and small kitchen area with a sink, microwave, fridge, and table. It also opened up onto a private balcony which was a plus;most of the other rooms here open up onto a common outside corridor. Room decor was fun; cool lamps and lampshades, colorful prints on the furniture, wavy mirrors and sooo groovy bedlamps (no lavalamps though). The decor didn't extend to the bathroom area, which was standard motel issue. Rooms were clean enough, though the bed showed evidence of being made very quickly and there were stains on the bathroom floor. The sheets were also of a low linen count and the pillows were uncomfy (again, standard motel issue). Without a doubt the piece de resistance of this place is the center lobby and pool area. Coffee and a limited continental breakfast was served in the morning in this oh so fashionable lobby, and the hot tob and pool area were as fab as could be. Bottom line is i would recommend the starlux and stay there again, it was a lot fun in a disney world sort of way. It's clearly one of the if not the most memorable place to stay on the south jersey shore. Just remember what it is first and foremost: a motel.

It'S A Bad Sign That This Motel Is Rated #1
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
Let me start by saying that i'm 33 years old and have been going to wildwood every summer since i was 6. I keep my expectations fairly low because i know wildwood is hardly an upscale resort town. The morey family owns most of wildwood -- including the boardwalk piers, seapointe village, the pan american hotel, the port royal hotel, and it's latest property - the starlux. I've stayed at them all. The starlux has the best location as it's right on rio grande, centrally located in the heart of wildwood, in walking distance to the boardwalk. It's a block off of ocean, so it doesn't really have much of a view. This is the first year we tried the starlux. We weren't turned off by the outdoor entrances to the hotel rooms, that it had no restaurant, or the fact that it was the most expensive of the morey propeties (other than seapointe), assumably because of it's proximity to the boardwalk. We figured we'd give it a try because we hadn't ever stayed there and it looked like a fun place to party at for the memorial day weekend with our friends who tagged along with us. Now, before i give you the bad news, let me start by saying it wasn't all that bad. Comparatively it is much nicer than most of the motels in the area -- but anyone who comes to wildwood regularly knows that's not that difficult. Most of the motels in wildwood are complete dumps. (though that is changing quickly - many motels have since been torn down to make way for a massive influx of condos.) Relative to the pan american, the port royal, and of course seapointe village (which are condo rentals only), the starlux is far, far inferior. The rooms are very small and show an unusual amount of wear and tear for one of wildwood's "newer" motels. The sink was completely clogged and could not be fixed no matter what was tried. The pillows were horrible, but we remembered to bring our own. Two of our lamps didn't have lightbulbs. The tv had absolutely zero watchable channels. The bathroom was clearly still from the 1950s. But i think the grossest part occurred when my fiance was looking for something that fell underneath the bed and uncovered a pair of someone else's boxer shorts. Ewwwww. Really disgusting. Forgetting that little event, i wouldn't have minded having a cd player in our room either -- though i believe the efficiencies do have them. On the good side, the pool and hot tub were very nice, though they really should scrub the nasty ring around the hot tub. They have an incredibly cool "common room" which guests can use, but no one apparently did. (why would you want to be inside during the summer?) So all in all, the starlux got the job done, but for less money i would have definitely opted for one of their other hotels had i known more. Compared to many other places in wildwood, the starlux is definitely a good choice, but i would recommend doing some research and considering someplace else. I personally would not go back there. Consider that wildwood is finally undergoing a bit of a renaissance of sorts, and new and refurbished properties are popping up all the time: do your homework and see what's available out there. Tripadvisor is a great site, but i really feel the #1 rating for the starlux is very misleading. Perhaps try wildwood crest, which isn't as centrally located, but certainly has some nicer properties. If you go to the starlux you will find my review to be right on the money: the starlux is neutral/average. Nothing more. Nothing less. Hope you find this helpful! And make sure you try blue olive! Wildwood finally got itself a pretty damn good restaurant! (something else that is a rare find in the area over the years!)

Fun Atmosphere In A Central Location
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

My husband and 3 kids and i stayed at the starlux in aug. '04. The pool stayed open til around 10 p.m. So it was great for an after dinner swim, and we didn't feel compelled to go to the boardwalk every night to keep our kids entertained. The staff were extremely polite and helpful and our room was immaculately clean. The decor was fun, with lots of bright colors and lava lamps. It's a block off the beach so there wasn't much of a view but with my kids we dont' have much time to sit around looking at the view anyway. It was convenient to walk to the boardwalk, ice cream, pizza, coffee and newspapers, etc. It was nice to not have to get in the car for every little thing. The only thing about the room that really bugged me was the toilet. It's not like the kind you have in your house, it's the kind that they have in public bathrooms where there is no lid that closes and a handle that you would tend to flush with your foot.
