This howard johnsons was built in the 1930's and has recently renovated. We were looking for three budget rooms for our four day stay in atlantic city. I planned to book the tropicana bud when I found out that the $97.00 rate I had seen weeks before had gon up to $159 I switch to hojo's at $74.00 per night. The staff was very friendly, the hojo's resteraunt was clean and the food was fine. The hotel rooms were clean but dated. Older motel furniture but clean comfortable beds, redone clean bathrooms and the maids did a nice job cleaning the rooms everyday. It's a nice budget hotel a bout two blocks from the hilton and the tropicana. If you don't mind walking outside from the casinos to your hotel at 1am this hotel is fine. We had rooms 213 207 and 215 on the street side so the first night mom said the noise woke her up. We live in the country so we were not use to street noise at night. If I had to I stay at this budget hotel again. It has a nice spot for breakast bagle with butter only a buck good coffee a $7.50 breakfast buffet, clean rooms, slow elevators a decent pool. Not bad for what we paid for. Next time I go, I would look for a good rate at a casino hotel up by the showboat. You are kind of isolated at this end of the boardwalk. We went to all of the casinos and they all seemed very nice.

We went on a mid week package. The front desk had to move us 2 times. First time they gave us a smoking room when we requested non-smoking. The second time they said the room was against fire code because it didnt have a chain on the door. Bathroom outdated. Lovely view of roof top full of outdoor furniture thrown from hotel next door. Exposed painted pipes as you walk through hallways. Elevator jumps when in it. You have to use the parking garage next door which belongs to the holiday inn and you have to walk through holidays inn's lobby out to the sidewalk to get to howard jonhsons. Sure, you could load/unload your bags by the curb to make it easier, but watch yourself. We were approached by someone asking us for money while we were loading our bags into our car.

Howard Johnson'S On The Boardwalk

Visitor Review
My husband & I have traveled to atlantic city, nj & have had pleasant experiences. However, this last time we made reservations for our stay at the howard johnson's hotel on the boardwalk. How could we go wrong. Well, we get there & some other couple were in a bind, it seems someone had checked them out a day earlier than what it should have been. I felt bad for this couple but mistakes happen right? Well, after the front desk finally registerd us from our reservations(thank god we had reservations), we, along with another couple we brought with us, went to our rooms. We found the window was left open, no screen in the other couple's room & the carpet & chairs were soaked. The following mornig, I went to make coffee & we had everything except coffee.I called down to the front desk & was told I had to come down to pick it up as housekeeping wasn't in until 10. Well, while there I decided to change rooms. This was on a monday so better working rooms would be available. The night auditore, first said there weren't any, when I complained about the window, toilets & showers(not working very well either), he happened to find one. Then he said it was availabe & one of us could move then(8am) then he said no, it wasn't clean. Yes, I was getting annoyed be now. Well he told me to have our suitcases packed & left in the rooms & he would have house keeping to move us so when we came back from the casinos to exchange keys. We walked the boardwalk , went to the taj & later walked back.we took our time played some slots, we went back to the hotel, while I was getting my key ready the desk clerk acted like we were lying. The evening manager smartly said we had to be there in order to change rooms & then laughed.there didn't seem to be any rooms available again& there wasn't anything she could do about it. Well that was it. Yes I called her some unlady like names. The jacquizzi was not working, the air conditioners weren't working properly. The pool was filthy. My husband finally did get us new rooms. But take it from us, don't stay at the howard johnsons at the boardwalk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't expect ceasar's palace but also didn't expect a view of prostitutes and drug dealers directly outside my window. The staff was rude, the room smelled, the elevator was a thrill ride and the indoor pool was an outdoor pool due to the recent collapse of the roof. Given the choice of sleeping on the beach or this hotel I would take the beach!

We spent new year's eve in atlantic city. We were able to get a room at the howard johnson on tennessee and pacific avenue. The rooms are average, nothing spectacular, but clean. We did think they were overpriced but knew that would happen on new year's eve. We have stayed there before and will probably book there in the future.

Better Places To Stay, But Not Terrible…
By Anonymous on Friday, June 16, 2006

Visitor Review
Although the hotel's location is just off the boardwalk, it is really a no-frills type of place. As mentioned elsewhere, the furnishings --especially the bathroom-- are relics from a different era, to be sure. But the rooms themselves are clean, which should be the main point. If you are looking for individual guest control of temperature, then this is not the place for you. Although I stayed in this hotel in november of 2002, I wanted to access either the air conditioning or at least lower the temperature; I could do neither, as the room thermostat was not operational. In fairness, though, the room did cool off by early evening. As for the previously mentioned discarded furniture...well, just be happy it was *furniture* lying up there! If you just plan to park your car and not touch it again until you leave the city, the silly set-up of going through the holiday inn to reach howard johnson from the parking garage will not seem like such a big hassle. If you plan on repeatedly using your car while in the city, however, it will become tiring. As a side note, the parking *is* free, as well as inside from the elements. Overall, this howard johnson's property is functional, but nothing more.

We knew that this was not going to be a 5 star hotel but, we were surprised that it was as nice and clean as it was> this is the first hotel that as non smokers we we able to stay in a "smokers" room. It didn't smell like smoke. Also we could not believe that the front desk called and asked if everything was ok and whether or not we needed anything. It was a pleasant surprise.

More Renovations Needed
By Anonymous on Friday, June 16, 2006

Visitor Review
Hotel chosen for the room rate and how close to boardwalk. Lobby had a lingering smell of cigarette smoking and no staff to help with the luggage. Shocked by the old hotel room and the bathroom. Rusted sink and bath tub leaked. Not enough towels or toiletries to accommodate guests. Sound proofing a must, you can hear other guests talking and the television. Hotel restaurant was not inviting or friendly. Electric outlets in room were old with only one three prong outlet on a lamp. No internet access or data port. Made a local call to access internet and got charged long distance fees. This hotel needs much renovating immediately.

Oh My God.....(Beware)

Just got back today and had to warn everyone. The garage actually belongs to the holiday inn next door, we had quite a walk through the holiday inn lobby every time we went to our car. The howard johnson's hotel lobby smelled, the gameroom consisted of 3 outdated games, and these are the good points. My small room on the 3rd floor smelled like a bad mixture of mildew and cheap air spray. The bathroom was outdated, with rust in the sink and toilet. The beds were ok, but the pillows were like paper, they remind me of the little pillows on airplanes. It rained several times while we were there and the water seeped into the carpets inside the closet and around the balcony door. The electrical outlets were hit or miss, sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't. We did have entainment on our last night, about 2 am, there was a prostitution sting across from our balcony. I would stay clear of this hotel if you plan on staying more than one night.

One Word - Scary

I saw howard johnson's online and they had a holiday package deal going on. So I looked into the place, talk about misleading! Supposedly they had just had major renovations, (I'm glad I didn't see it before hand), and looked great (online). So i went ahead and booked. I was more than a little confused by the fact that you have to walk through the holiday inn to get to the hojo, but walking through the holiday inn turned out to be the nicest part of the stay. There were about 40 people camped out in the lobby as the rooms were not ready for check-in, (it was check-in time). We had about a 45 min. Wait past check-in time and while in line experienced the rudeness of the staff in dealing with a couple ahead of us. I was appalled by the behavior of the front desk staff. The doors and walls must be made out of cardbooard because you hear children running rampant down the hallway a millon and a half times into the wee hours of the morning and are aware everytime your neighbor has used the restroom. Be forwarned - don't look out your window unless you are prepared to see prositutes in active pursuit of business about 50 feet from you. Don't come to atlantic city until you can afford to stay somewhere other than the hojo because your horrible hotel experience is all you'll remember and you'll never come back.

Not Recommended…

Ok...so I got stuck with this hotel through priceline and I was a little frightened for my health to stay at this hotel after reading the mixed reviews. This hotel is located off the path of the bulk of the casinos and is probably not in the "nice side of town". I saw the that the address had listed "boardwalk and chelsea..ok great!! I will ask for an ocean view. I was informed at the front desk that they are not on the boardwalk and there are no rooms with a view because of the 14 floor holiday inn next door. Ok...up to my room...#111. The room itself had a lemony scent and suprisingly did not compltely gross me out. Opened the blinds to a view motel across the street that I could only guess rented by the hour. Oh, and they had a pawn shop on the first floor. How convenient!! I sat on the chair and began to browse the local paper for a place to grab a bite...sirens blaring outside and I could hear a conversation the couple in the next room were having as clear as if they were sitting across from me...ok...I'm not going to let it bother me. We go out to dinner and hit the casino's and come back to the room about 2am...could not get more than 30 minutes of sleep at any point because of shady characters outside talking, sirens blaring and other guests, probably on the floor above slamming thier doors. I don't recommend this hotel for anyone who is looking for a 3 or even 2 star hotel experience. Oh...did I mention the parking lot is located at the holiday inn where you have to use the skanky smelly service elevator to access the garage??

The Good and Bad

Everything was ok, but parking was confusing. We had to walk through the holiday inn and into the howard j. They share a parking deck. Everything was clean. The hotel was aged, but the service was very friendly. All you can eat breakfest. The elavator was scary. It made a noise. The fire alarm went off and we were locked in a certain part of the hotel with no other exit. When we tried to open the door, the handle fell off. There was no fire, but if there had been we would have been locked in there. We had a nice room, very very clean. Although I went to sit on the bed and it broke! I had to lift the bed up and put the legs back out. The staff was friendly. But unless your really broke stay somewhere else.

A Nice Hotel
By Anonymous on Friday, June 16, 2006

Visitor Review
A nice place. We arrived on a friday afternoon and were allowed to check in. The room with a balcony faced the main street, which was nice. We had the door open to get some air, and soon found out that the noise was too much. But this wasn't the hotel's fault, there was picketing going on in front of the econo lodge (which was next door)and they were banging on tubs and making all kinds of noise. We inquired about another room and were given a room on the other side of the building, which was very nice and quiet (it too had a balcony). The room was very clean, accomodating, and it had a comfortable bed. The resturantant attached to the hotel, had a nice breakfast buffet, the food was good and the price reasonable. The only thing I didn't like was that the hotel shared its parking lot with the holiday inn next to it. You parked your car there and went through the holiday inn to get to the howard johnsons. Also, the lot fills up fast with people parking their car anywhere there is a spot for a car, whether it's a spot or not. All in all a nice hotel, with good accomodations and food. The ritz it's not, but an accomodating hotel it is.

Beware Don'T Use Your Credit Card

We stayed at the hotel from june 24 - june 26. The elevator scared me so bad that I braved the steps 4 flights everytime (there is no permit or weight limit posted) . My credit card was overcharged!!! And the hotel will not correct it. Also, the toilet didn't work, the shower dribbled and there was food trays left in the hall for hours and hours. We couldn't get any sleep because of all the yelling and screaming outside because of the part of town. Also, it is not on the boardwalk. The only compliment that I have for this hotel is the restaurant, it was pretty good.

Howard Johnson Leaves Some To Be Desired
By Anonymous on Friday, June 16, 2006

Visitor Review
Stayed two nights. When we arrived the parking was very inconveniant. We had to walk through the holiday inn hotel first then out onto the street and then to howard johnson. The room was a little on the small side the bathroom was very small. We asked for a roll up bed and the staff brought up a roll up refrige instead and we had to call again then they finally brought up the roll up bed. The ice machines were either broke or empty! The elevators were painfully slow!! The staff when we left had trouble finding our car keys! The staff was at best "average"! The pool was pretty nice. The cafe which had a buffet breakfast was however was very good for a decent price. The best part of this disappointing hotel is the location. It is only one block from the boardwalk and beach and one block from the tropicana.

Stay Away!
By Anonymous on Friday, June 16, 2006

Visitor Review
We made a reservation using the internet. The pictures and discription on the internet are not what you find in reality. The lobby is musty smelling. There is a bell cap counter, but no bell caps. I found our room to be musty also. The internet discription of ocean view: we did not even have a full window. There was a window stretching across the top of the wall with big red letters across stating read pool rules. The bedside table clock was not plugged in and we could not find a socket. We called desk services and we were told it was somewhere behind the beds but they don't know where. We moved the beds and found one socket not a traditional doulbe socket, but one socket. We had a choice of pulgging in the clock or the light. The light kept flicking off and on. The room was very depressing and felt like a prison cell. We did the smart thing and checked out. We payed more money and checked into the holiday inn next door and had a wonderful time. I recommend you bypass howard johnsons and go straight to holiday inn.

In Need of Repair

In bad need of repair-- peeling wallpaper, leaky ceiling, dirty bedspreads, not enough hot water for the shower. I could hear the person in the next room snoring at night! I would never stay here again. It was way overpriced for what you get. I would expect to pay $50 for a hotel like that, instead of $150. The only plus was that it was close to the boardwalk, the hilton, and the tropicana.

The Worst Hotel Ever
By Anonymous on Friday, June 16, 2006

Visitor Review
My husband and I stayed here in june 2005 for a wedding. We waited at the front desk for at least 15 minutes with about six other people. There were three girls behind the desk, and only one was helping customers. When we did get up to the desk it was like we were bothering them. The elevator was frightening. The rooms were in horrible condition. Bugs and more bugs. I am by no means uptight and prissy, but I would have rather slept outside (maybe not though - this area is kind of scary at night..don't bring kids). I guess I would describe the rooms as disgusting. We decided that since we were only there for one night, and we would spend most of the day exploring that we would just suck it up. Well, my husband ended up feeling ill so we had to go back to the room. We ended up going to bed fairly early. I wanted to go out to the casinos myself, but I didn't feel safe there. So I stayed. At 9:30 pm, the fire alarms started going off. They went off and on for about three hours, and once more in the middle of the night. No one at the desk could be reached by phone. People were wandering around in the hallway wondering if they should run or jump out the windows. By the fifth or sixth time though I just tried to ignore it and watch tv but it was really hard.

Not As Bad As They Say

I stayed here about two years ago and found a not so bad place. So what if the hookers were working out back. They did not bother anybody and it is a sure bet an areas with hookers is an area with heavy police presence. We booked the casino coin bonus package and let me tell you it was good food and it is a good way to stretch your gaming dollar by going sun thru thurs. You dont have to worry about food and you get 60 in coin per person. I am not the type of person to judge but to be honest the people who try to put themselves above others should steer clear of this one. I would do it again however if I can get a decent rate in a casino I will stay there its all about value.

Worth The Money

The hotel staff were very friendly. We have had problems in our past with maids walking in our room at 5 star hotels, but this place the maids did a great job. We left a note for them with a special request and they did as we asked. The only thing I really didn't like about this place was it was very old and the a/c was very loud. If you are a light sleeper you might not like that. Plus the bathroom had a funny smell and the room had a musty smell. But you don't live in your room and it was very close to the beach. I thought it was worth it.
